一方面，上市公司经营运作的资金有利率成本，利率变化意味着成本的变化，加息则代表着企业利润的削减，相关证券的价值反映内在价值，必然会伴随着下跌；另一方面，流入证券市场的资金在收益率方面往往有一定的标准和预期，同期利率往往是参照标的，当利率提升时，在证券市场中寻求回报资金要求获得高于利率的收益率水平，如果难以达到，资金将会流出市场转向收益率高的领域，这种反向变动的趋势在债券市场上尤为突出。
