基金是由专业基金经理管理的一种集成投资计划。这些计划汇集了投资取向相近人士的资金，投资于股票、债券及货币市场工具。

当投资者购入基金时，会获发某一数量的基金单位或股份，它们的价值会随基金的资产净值升跌而转变。每个单位的价格，已反映基金的资产净值再加上或扣除任何已披露的费用后的余值。

基金产品的种类很丰富，不同基金品种的风险特征相差很大。造成这种差异的主要原因是基金投资资产的风险。一般而言，各类基金的风险特征由高到低的排列是：股票型基金、混合型基金、债券型基金、货币市场型基金。
