沃尔沃S80L加长版的侧撞保护系统进行了重新设计以提供更好的防侧撞性能，它利用一种高强度钢支撑框架和车身底盘将碰撞力从乘员处进行分散转移。侧气帘也相应延长了140毫米。除车身加强件外，系统的侧气囊也采用了单独的充气回路，使臀部囊腔的充气压力为胸部囊腔压力的5倍。这样有助于在身体最脆弱的部位最大限度地吸收碰撞力。这一创新是在我们的事故研究的基础上利用仿真技术开发的。
