凤凰湖原是一处水流湍急的河滩，古代曾在这里建有大王庙，因此俗称大王滩。1958年大跃进时期，政府组织人民在这里兴建水库，将水拦在凤凰山下，蓄水量达五亿四千万立方米，可灌溉20多万亩农田，养殖大量鲜鱼，不但变害为宝，还由于美丽的水光山色，成了一处旅游风景区，人们以“凤凰湖”称之。

凤凰湖由外湖、里湖和数不清的汊湖组成，南北长8公里，东西宽9公里，面积约为2460万平方米。到凤凰湖游览，一是游艇游湖，坐在艇上一面吹着习习凉风，一面欣赏湖光山色，甚为惬意；一是到湖中划定的游泳区游泳，那宽阔的水面任人自由伸展，那种感觉是人工游泳池所不能比拟的。

凤凰湖风景区内还建有园林别墅式的度假村，人们都喜欢到这里开各种团体会议或欢度周末。凤凰湖距南宁30多公里，驱车半个多小时即可到达，可当天来回，亦可小住一晚。
