1991年8月，第三代高尔夫上市，它以椭圆型前灯和时尚的外观展现给市场一个完全不同的新形象。其个性和性能符合豪华轿车的要求，减振效果和防撞性能都非常出色，1992年8月，第三代高尔夫系列车型都为驾驶员和前排乘客配备了安全气囊，同时提供给消费者更多可选择的发动机，其中，柴油发动机排量可达1.9升，而GTI排量则高达2升。

1991年11月，高尔夫家族新添高尔夫VR6,紧凑型车中的第一款6缸轿车，大众为此开发了交角仅为15度的横置VR6发动机，排量为2.8升，扭矩提升到235牛米，输出功率达到128千瓦，因为以上的技术优势，高尔夫的性能总体上提升到了一个更高的档次，此后又有更多新款车型面世，1993年8月，高尔夫敞篷车上市，该车车体更宽敞具备高尔夫第三代的新性能。
