1974年3月，高尔夫正式投产，8月上市。大众公司本没有希望高尔夫取得“甲壳虫”式的成功，但事实证明，高尔夫取得的成就远远高出了大众的预期，瞬间就抓住了消费者的心。它的造型不仅提供了更宽敞的空间，而且还解决了甲壳虫线形侧风下不稳的问题。高尔夫实现了更快的车速，外加更高的安全性。高尔夫最早配用1.1升四缸发动机，最高车速达到140公里/小时。后来换装1.5升的发动机，极速上升到160公里/小时。

1976年，1.6升燃油喷射汽油机装备了运动型的高尔夫，这就是第一辆GTI，它的最大功率是81千瓦(110马力)，的极速也随之上升为181公里/小时，而同时代的中尺寸车极速不过165公里/小时。GTI很快成为就成为年轻人的新宠，各种围绕它的赛事、游艺雨后春笋般冒出来。

1976年10月，大众公司推出了柴油机版的高尔夫——第一款使用柴油机的小型车。大众公司成功地把1.5升柴油机压缩到同等汽油机大小，而其百公里油耗比同等汽油机少了2升。

1976年10月27日，第一百万辆高尔夫在沃尔夫斯堡下线。这是高尔夫轿车历史上具有里程碑意义的一件事。

1979年3月，高尔夫敞篷车隆重上市，这种开着天窗的轿车是由新一代高尔夫改进而成,它连续生产了14年，共销售38.85万辆，成为全球销量最大的敞篷车。
